It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude. It’s gratitude that brings us happiness

Gratitude is a strange emotion. Over time, we tend to take things for granted. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about nice weather, our spouse, our job, or a new car.

Yep. You guessed it. I was sick over the last few weeks, but feel quite a bit better this morning. It makes me feel grateful that I’m not still sick.

After several days of rain, don’t you feel relieved to see the sun shine? I do.

Over time I have learned to recognize when I start to take the people closest to me for granted… especially my wife. When this happens, I remember what it was like before she came into my life. How many lonely nights I spent, and how spartan my house was without her warmth and her decorating skills.

Likewise, when I take my old truck for granted it is good to remind myself that it has been, and continues to be a very good and economical means of transportation… and no car payment! One sure-fire way of appreciating your means of transportation is to have it break down and start looking for alternative transportation… like walking! There is a big surge of gratitude when it’s back on the road, isn’t there?

The truth is that we ALL have something to be grateful for. If you are feeling sad, make a gratitude list. Just start writing down the things you have to be grateful for and you might be surprised how long it will get. It is my belief that it is impossible to feel grateful and sad at the same time. Gratitude brings happiness.

Have a great day everyone!
