Thought for the day – “Treat the Janitor the same as the CEO”

As a kid, one of my heroes was the guy on the back of the trash truck. Last week, I caught the guys picking up the trash here at the house, and made it a point to thank them for doing a great job.

Too often we enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labor without giving them credit for their contributions. For example many of us enjoy a nice thick hamburger, but wouldn’t dream of working in a slaughterhouse. In fact some would look down on them for their occupations. Personally I have a lot more respect for them than many white-collar workers driving BMW’s.

Another example - We enjoy a certain amount of freedom and security in the U.S. This has been hard won by men and women in the military who were willing to endure hardships and sacrifices many could never imagine, but our servicemen and women make about the same salary as a fast food cook. Worse, returning veterans often spend months or even years unemployed and have difficulty getting medical care. A friend of mine, Bohdi Sanders says “The best defense against evil men is good men skilled at violence.” I tend to agree. We owe a LOT to those who are willing to defend us.

Not everyone needs to be a soldier, a butcher, a janitor, or work on a trash truck, but we sure owe a debt of gratitude to those that do these and other so-called “menial” jobs. Without them our lives would be much different.

Today, I make it a point to pay attention to the people that get things done we often don’t notice, and let them know their contributions are appreciated. Won’t you consider doing the same?

Have a great day everyone!
