Calmness in the face of adversity

Thought for the day – Calmness in the face of adversity shows three great strengths – Faith, strength and courage.

Acceptance is the answer to all my problems.” When I first heard that line it made me angry. Too many people were already apathetic and I felt like we needed to get off our tails and do something about it!

The truth is that all of the truly happy and successful people I’ve met had this in common and it puzzled me for quite a while. Even the Samurai Warrior spent hours practicing Zen meditation along with the martial arts. Why? It seemed like a waste of time to me.

The answer lies in the fact that our minds and bodies are much more efficient when we are in a relaxed state. Not relaxed like going to sleep, but relaxed like are totally in the present (“here” and “now”) and willing to accept whatever happens as an experience, not necessarily good or bad.

Surprisingly, if a fighter clenches his fist while striking it will be much slower than a relaxed fist that only tightens on impact.

Our minds are the same way. When stressed out and worried, we tend to make more mistakes… not to mention we don’t enjoy our lives as much.

The Zen warrior is told to act as though he has already died when entering battle. This way whatever happens can be accepted.

In Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus said – “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’…

So, my recipe for a happy life is this simple prayer we have all heard –

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Today I can at least understand the phrase “Acceptance is the answer to all my problems.” …even if I have trouble living it at times! Lol

Have a great day everyone!
